ABOUT ME

minnetrista_snow_squarespace.jpg

Hello there. I’m Brad, and I’m a lifelong student of the arts.

I love photography, cinema, writing, and graphic design. I also have an affinity for math and physics, and my brain is constantly trying to push those subjects into my art.

Most of my adult life has been in academia, where I’ve taught graphic design, video, and screenwriting.

I consider myself a ‘creative educator’. My teaching approach includes writing original articles with a mixture of created and curated elements to assist in the learning process. I like to do this for a few reasons. I think the proprietary nature of creating elements exclusively for the demonstration of an idea or concept is beneficial to the learning process. I like the sense of solidarity that I get with students when I’m creating things for class, too. And creating things satiates that part of me that needs to ‘make’ something during an academic semester.

(I’ve recently left my longtime teaching position to pursue my own creative interests, including launching my nature photography site, Cinema Natura.🌲)

I’m a camera guy, and you’ll often find me with a camera in my hands, around my neck, or on my shoulder. I shoot primarily Fujifilm because I feel the most joy using these cameras. Nature photography will always be my genre of choice, but I’ve shot portraits, events, weddings, you name it. Contact me if you have a fun project in mind.

I’ve always loved movie posters. I have them hanging all over my house and several that are patiently waiting for their turn on the wall again. I’ve somewhat recently started trying my own hand at making them. I’m still trying to discover myself when it comes to format and style, but each new design helps me get one step closer to figuring it out.

I’m a lover of fiction, specifically the sci-fi, fantasy, and horror genres. I’m currently working on a feature-length sci-fi/eco-horror script set in rural Indiana. Ask me how it’s going from time to time; I can always use the motivation.

Other than my work as an educator, I’ve worked as a photographer, videographer, camera operator, director, editor, animator, replay operator, and production assistant for projects that range from live broadcasts to short form documentaries and music videos.

I’ve been directly and indirectly involved with several (dozens?) of award-winning projects. I don’t keep track anymore, but I probably should.

When I’m not working, I spend my free time watching movies, playing video games, hiking, writing, designing things, and hanging out with my cats and beautiful fiance, Cassi.
